My top 10 essential habits for successfully keeping healthy

Being healthy does not just mean eating salads and going for a daily run. Being healthy is so much more and this is why just a simple change in your diet and exercise habits do not necessarily equate with success in the long-term. To become healthy requires a certain attitude and openness (read more here) to explore yourself alongside making changes to your diet and movement habits. Hence, here are my top 10 habits that have helped me to become and successfully keep healthy!

  1. Upgrading meals: don’t change your diet all at once, but add nutrients into it, so crowding out the choices that are less supportive to your body. This makes dietary changes doable, balanced and approachable.
  2. Pre-prepare meals or ingredients on the weekend to make quick, nourishing and satisfying dinners and lunches in the week and to avoid having to buy processed ready meals that are high in sugars and unhealthy fats and low in nutrients.
  3. Make conscious choices about the food you eat and stand by your decisions even if you are not eating the healthiest of foods at the time.
  4. Find pleasure in eating by engaging your senses: taste, smell, sight, touch (don’t you just love fingerfood?!). Switch off anything that distracts like your TV.
  5. Exercise for fun, not to burn calories. Read more here.
  6. Be flexible about your diet and your exercise regime. Nobody is perfect. Just because one meal is not as you feel it should be, does not mean you cannot change things for the next one. See point 2!
  7. Be mindful of how you think about yourself, your body and your food habits. Meditation, gratitude and mindfulness exercises can really help you figure out what you think about yourself and help you discover limiting beliefs that may cause you to self-sabotage.
  8. Find people to surround yourself with that elevate you and not pull you down, that help you reach your goals instead of doubt you, that support you in making those changes happen for good.
  9. Make sure to ‘fulfill’ yourself not just with food, but also mental, emotional and spiritual nourishment. Make time for things and activities you enjoy doing: it’s about self-care and self-love. After all, you cannot give from an empty bowl.
  10. Sleep! This is a biggie because it really affects you emotionally and physically and has knock on effects on how you eat, what you eat, what you feel and how you think about yourself. Make sure to get your 8-9 hours per night and see what happens!

  2. 6 and 9 were huge for me as I transitioned from eating all processed, sugar-laden CRAP to a more whole foods based diet. Luckily, exercise has always been a part of my active life- and always for fun.

    1. Thanks so much. I have just looked at the list again and your comment really made me think how different points on this list have different priorities in different situations. They are all important, but there is a fluidity to their importance at any given time! Oh, and so yes to exercising for fun! It is a completely different feeling.
