In my last blog post on what a health coach is (you can read about it here) I talked about how health coaches can help you achieve your health goals from basic wellbeing to controlling the symptoms of more serious (chronic) diseases. Now, this is a wide range of topics and covers a whole load of issues, so many health coaches actually work with a specific group of clients, particularly if their knowledge or their own experiences have already given them a head start in a certain topic area. For instance, health coaches who have their own history of Type 2 Diabetes may feel particularly drawn to help people who have Type 2 Diabetes to improve their symptoms.
So, where do I fit in then? Well, having worked in a quite demanding environment that required long hours and where I soon noticed that being myself meant I am being taken advantage off, I realized quickly that I had to take care of my physical, mental and emotional wellbeing. Over time I learned through trial and error what worked and what not, but I still walked out of my last contract with what I know now was adrenal fatigue (or burn out). It’s been well over a year now I finished working on my last contract, however, I am still in recovery and need to be very careful with my energy which can be really high one week and very low the next. I had to become very aware of what works for me and what does not work for me and where I have to prioritize. Consistency in my – what I call – ‘healthy habits’ is an absolute must for me. No negotiating. Those healthy habits combine everything that nourishes me on a physical, mental and emotional level and often starts with basic nutrition guidelines, looks into appropriate exercise regimes and active relaxation.
As a result and in my work as a health coach I am focussed on busy professionals who know that they need to find a better balance in their life to counter effect the demands in their day jobs, but who are struggling to be consistent in their healthy habits. Most of these people will also be confused about what is actually good for them with the wealth of contrary dietary guidelines that are out there and have lost confidence in themselves because any previous attempts to make healthy habits consistent have failed. As part of the health coaching we dive deep to explore what is holding them back and set small, doable goals so that changes can be introduced step by step and so that we notice immediately if something does not work out. After all, we are all different, so why should we assume that there is the same solution for everyone when it comes to diet, movement regime, self care or even how we treat ourselves?
What defines all of these clients is the genuine desire to want to make changes to their unique situation and how they are dealing with it. This includes also looking in depth at themselves and how their behaviour and actions are currently contributing to the dilemma they find themselves in. They are also aware that this is not a quick fix, but a long term commitment to themselves to take their health to the next level.
